Made from sycamore and spruce, the Mandocello
features a pick-up made by Nick using rolled mylar film on a brass
tube.
The design is based on an early 20th century Gibson
model. The Gibson company manufactured a range of instruments
for an entire mandolin orchestra.

DULCIMER :
Descended from the European fretted zither family,
the Appalachian, or lap dulcimer, made its first appearance in
the Appalachian mountains (North America), probably in the early
part of the 19th century.
Nick's dulcimer is self-made c.1982, the instrument
features four played strings and two sympathetics. Nick also designed
the pick-ups used on the instrument, which has been used on all
of his solo albums.

THEREMIN :
The Theremin was invented by the Russian inventor
Leon Termin, and was the first electronic music instrument and
paved the way for today's modern synthesizers. The distinctive
sound can be heard in 1950's sci-fi films, and was also used by
the Beach Boys' classic hit 'Good Vibrations'.
The sound is produced by the proximity and movement
of the player's hands to a pair of antennae; one controlling pitch,
the other volume.
Built from a kit of parts imported from the Theremax
company in the United States. Nick built the kit and housed the
design in an old Bush Radio case.
